Mary Lucy Cartwright
Mary Lucy nació en Aynho, Inglaterra, el 17 de diciembre de 1900.
Durante sus años escolares se sentía más atraída por la Historia que por otras materias, pero le resultaba complicado tener que aprenderse de memoria las largas listas de acontecimientos históricos, que era el método usual de aprender historia en aquellos tiempos. Ésta fue una de las causas de que decidiera, en octubre de 1919, ingresar en la Universidad de St. Hugh, en Oxford, para estudiar Matemáticas, con ella eran cinco las mujeres en toda la facultad. En esta época las clases estaban atestadas de estudiantes ya que, después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, regresaron a las aulas los muchachos que volvían de la guerra. Mary tuvo muchas veces que tomar apuntes sobre sus rodillas, sentada en un pasillo, por falta de espacio en las aulas. Su decisión de estudiar Matemáticas no disminuyó su interés por la Historia, como se refl eja en muchos de sus escritos matemáticos que incluyen las perspectivas históricas que les conciernen y agregan así una dimensión muy interesante a su trabajo.
Se graduó en Oxford en 1923 y enseñó matemáticas durante cuatro años en las escuelas de Alicia Ottley en Worcester, primero, y en la de la abadía de Wycombe en Buckinghamshire, después, antes de volver a la Universidad en 1928 para doctorarse bajo la supervisión de G.H. Hardy. En 1930 obtuvo una beca de investigación en la Universidad de Girton, en Cambridge. Allí conoció a Littlewood y solucionó un problema planteado por él.
Su “Teorema de Cartwright”, que trata sobre máximos de funciones, recurre a métodos que harán avanzar mucho su investigación sobre funciones y en especial sobre funciones que dan lugar a fractales. Trabajó con Littlewood en ecuaciones diferenciales que sirvieron como modelo para el desarrollo de la radio y el radar. Sus investigaciones influenciaron la teoría moderna de sistemas dinámicos.
En 1947 fue la primera mujer matemática nombrada miembro de la Real Sociedad. También fue la primera mujer presidente de la Sociedad Matemática de Londres en 1961. En 1963 fue la primera mujer que obtenía la medalla Sylvester, que se concede cada tres años al mérito matemático desde 1901 y que habían conseguido con anterioridad matemáticos de la talla de Poincaré (1901), Cantor (1904), Russell (1934) o Newman (1958). En 1968 recibe la medalla Morgan y en 1969 la máxima distinción británica; la reina la nombra Comandante del Imperio Británico.
Sus más allegados la describen como una persona con un gran sentido del humor que tenía un don que la hacía llegar al núcleo de una cuestión y ver el punto importante, en matemáticas y en asuntos humanos.
Murió en Cambridge, Inglaterra, el 3 de abril de 1998.

Hemos dicho que los trabajos de Lucy hicieron avanzar el conocimiento sobre funciones que dan lugar a fractales, pero ¿dónde podemos encontrar fractales u objetos de dimensión fractal?
Empecemos con una cita de B. Mandelbrot:

En los años 70 Mandelbrot utiliza por primera vez el término fractal para referirse a estructuras geométricas que parecen reproducirse de modo similar a diferentes escalas.
En la Naturaleza los fractales muestran la forma de crecer rellenando; líneas que crecen rellenando superficies, superficies que crecen rellenando volumen: las venas y arterias nos rellenan por dentro y las ramas de los árboles tratan de rellenar el espacio que ocupa la copa del árbol.
Podemos ver el vídeo de una entrevista a Mandelbrot realizada por Eduardo Punset (programa de televisión “Redes“) en la que habla sobre fractalidad y este reportaje muy interesante sobre “Fractales en la Naturaleza” también del programa “Redes” de Eduardo Punset, emitidos ambos en agosto de 2007.
En la actualidad los fractales son utilizados en múltiples campos: en el estudio de la propagación de incendios, en el estudio del ruido ambiente, en el diseño de antenas para teléfonos móviles, en medicina… Pero, sin duda, su aplicación más conocida es en el mundo del arte. Gracias al desarrollo de software que utiliza algoritmos fractales se crean hermosos efectos visuales que son ampliamente utilizados por la industria cinematográfica para producir, entre otros, paisajes fabulosos.

yo creo que ella fue muy importante porque de entre 5 mujeres, salio adelante con exito y con importantes titulos, y tambien por ser mujer tubo mas dificultades para estudiar, porque los hombres segun la epoca eran los mas importamtes, entonces yo creo que fue tan importante por todos sus esfuerzos, por realizar todos sus trabajos relacionados con los fractales que aunque ella no fue quien los descubrio dio una importante aportacion.
Mary lucy Cartwright, fue una mujer que a pesar de las circunstancias de su época en la que el hombre era el que sobresalia en el campo de la ciencia, Mary sobresalio en matemátecas por su persuverancias en el estudio, llegando a tener grandes premios y ser profesora en algunas Universidades importantes.
